Statement on Situation in Sudan, May 2023
UMBAJA e.V welcomes the signing of an Agreement on a Short-Term Ceasefire and Humanitarian Arrangements by the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on 20th of May 2023.
Ceasefire is a step in the right direction, and it enables the delivery of aid to more than half of the country's population who are in a dire need.
Ceasefire scheduled to commence at 09:45 p.m. Khartoum time on May 22, 2023, and stands ready to support the effective implementation of the 7-day ceasefire, as well as regional and international efforts aimed at swiftly ending the fighting in Sudan.
UMBAJA e.V repeats condemnation of the war that erupted on Saturday morning the 15th of April 2023 between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) in many parts of the capital Khartoum and other areas outside the capital.
As a result of these bloody clashes at least 676 people have been killed, over 200,000 have fled to neighboring countries, more than 5,576 have been injured and about 736,200 internally displaced. According to our sources there is a dire need of urgent aid.
UMBAJA e.V as a traditional supporter and promoter to the peaceful civilian action as an important revolutionary approach, will continue working with its partners inside and outside Sudan to stop this war and restore the civilian democratic transitional track, and we call German people, civil society and government to spend more efforts to support the people of Sudan in their seek for peace and democracy.
